Selkirk Labs released their latest paddle on August 2nd – the project 003. I have been using project 002 with the Invikta shape since February when it was first released to the public. I have absolutely loved 002 and have personally recommended it to other players. With 002 being such a great paddle, I was excited to try out Project 003 Epic. Here are my thoughts after a couple weeks of play:
Selkirk Labs Project 003 Review
First off, the 003 is currently only available in Epic and S2 models. The Epic shape took me a little while to find the sweet spot after a lot of play with the Invikta. Once I adjusted, the paddle performed incredibly well.
Spin
I am able to generate more spin with 003 than with the 002. My drives didn’t feel as powerful, but the added spin made them hard to return. Many shots dipped quite a bit below the net, creating a difficult return for my opponent. I am assuming the ball sits on Inthe face longer, allowing for more spin to be applied.
Control
I love the soft feel of this paddle. As a power player, I like to drive the ball hard and hit solid punch volleys. Half volleys shots have always been harder for me but have felt much less difficult with the 003. With an impressive 20mm core (the thickest core of any paddle on the market), it is easier to control shots when blocking hard drives.
Consistency
One of my favorite features of project 002 is the consistency of my shots. I feel like the whole face of the paddle is a sweet spot. The 003 plays extremely similar – I have not hit any dead spots while playing with it.
Sound
The other difference I noticed right away is the sound, or lack thereof, when the ball hits the paddle. When using the 002, you know when you hit the ball because the sound is loud and noticeable. The sound of the 003 is much more subdued and almost sounds like you hit the ball on the edge guard of an 002. Not a significant issue, but it did throw me off a little at first.
Pros & Cons
Here are some of the main pros and cons from the Selkirk Labs Project 003:
Pros:
- Incredible amount of spin
- Half volleys felt perfect and easy
- Drop shots were consistent
- Innovative edgeless design
Cons
- Less power
- Very quiet paddle
- No Invikta Shape Yet Available
In summary
Selkirk Labs Project 003 is a fantastic paddle and I would recommend it for all-around pickleball players. Control players will still have the consistency they want, but with added spin and touch. Power players can still generate speed, but the added spin and improved control makes drives even more dangerous.
